Joseph asks…

Dubai or Kuwait -family or no family?

I have a job offer for Dubai/Kuwait for £30k + 50% bonus rising to £35k after 6 months. Is this an affordable amount for Dubai or will i have to settle for Kuwait. Also do i bring my wife and 2 kids across or will that then make it unaffordable? Sorry for so many sub-questions but its a massive decision i have to make by Monday!

admin answers:

U dont say whether u will be given family accomodation or whether its 35k full stop. Thats about Dh 18,000 a month in dubai, not a lot if u have to fund accommodation and yr kids education both of which are expensive. There are no state schools for foreigners in dubai. However if u are a “bachelor” in dubai u may find it very hard as most european expats have their families with them and there will be a lot of temptation given the inifinite amount of socialising that is normal there. A lot of marriages have broken up over it. As u say a massive decision. I think kuwait may be better if ur on yr own as not so many westerners there and not so much social activity but thats only a guess i havent been there. I did however live in dubai for 12 yrs. The other thing u could do is go on yr own first , see how u get on and then maybe bring wife and kids in time for next academic year as by the time u get there now u will find it difficult to enrol them for this yr and the school yr ends mid june there. Its not as simple as here in the uk. Anything u want to know feel free to email good luck with whatever u decide. Yr wife and kids could visit u at xmas and/or easter.

Don’t go to dubai….They treat Indians like dirt over there….If you want to get a job overseas, get one somewhere like Europe or Australia….Don’t go to any arab country because they regard Indians as a slave race

Also I agree with the guy above me…You have done a MBA and you are looking for a job on yahoo answers??? Doesn’t inspire much confidence….

Donna asks…

What happens to your bank accounts if you loose your job in Dubai?

Say I get a work permit and residents visa through an employer in Dubai. I then go and open 5 current accounts at 5 different banks in Dubai. After 8 months I loose my job.

Obviously I will have to leave the country because my visa will be cancelled.

But what happens to my current accounts in Dubai if all 5 accounts are in credit by large amounts?

Will the banks close my accounts and ask me to transfer all my funds abroad or will i still be able to keep my accounts as long as i’m in credit?

Thanks.

admin answers:

Check with the bank about the rules. They are in the best position to give you advice. Besides that, as long as you have an ATM card that could be used anywhere, you should be okay withdrawing money. However, you should check with a tax consultant in your home country, if you’re returning home, you may be required to report the income when you return.

Betty asks…

how can i acquire a resident visa if i am working at Dubai?

if i visit Dubai with a tourist visa, can i look for a job there and if i have found a job, how what will be my visa, is still a tourist visa or working visa?

admin answers:

When you find a job while here on a tourist visa, your employer will arrange your residence visa and labour card. Some companies hire people and have them work on tourist visa during “probation”. This is against the Labour Law. All costs regarding the residence visa (visa costs, medical exam, translation etc) have to be on the employer and are not allowed to be deducted of the empoyee’s salary. Obtaining a residence visa takes around 2-4 weeks.

In case you have to do the procedere by yourself, you’ll need copies of passport, passport pictures, employment contract with salary shown, medical exam) and go to Immigration and Naturalization Department.
